He's actually a very good cook. We were in our 30's when we got married, so he had been living on his own & cooking for himself for years
We have different cooking styles. He is the type to precisely follow a recipe whereas I am more of a 'jazz' cook. He needs to know that we have the exact, correct ingredients on hand before he will make anything. I've learned to keep easy things on hand, in case I don't have the time to have dinner set up in the crock pot. Then it's simply a cell phone call telling him which cupboard to look in & what part of the freezer to find something!
Also, he is more comfortable cooking with the oldest (who is 13) than he is with the younger ones. As they get older & have learned from me, I suspect he will be OK with them in the kitchen as well.

I agree, Good for him!! And I agree it was a different combination, but if it works, that is all that matters. Last time I left hubby and kids for girls night out he made a "stew". If itwas in the frig or pantry, it was in the stew. It wan't bad. Time before that he made a baked spag. thing he said he invented. He added peppers, onions, garlic, etc. I was very very impressed and it was so good!
But now him in the kitchen with the kids helping, that could be dangerous! He does try and they try, but I think they would come up with some strange ideas.
I am thankful that he tries to cook, and for me as a stay at home mom (Sometimes I feel as if I do not contribute to the family...I guess because he makes the money and I spend it..bills, grocery, gas, kids,e tc) (now do not get me wrong, I LOVE LOVE LOVE being a stay at home mom and no amount of money would make me change my mind ) I love to cook for my family. It makes me feel good, like I ahve done something good for them, even if sometimes it is processed with sodium or out of a can and not what everyone would concider the healthiest choice.

Good for Daddy! My hubby would have either ordered pizza or, if he was feeling really adventurous, bought frozen, breaded something and baked it. Said breaded item would be served with Bush's beans and fries. He made a vow as a child to never allow a vegatable to touch his lips...
My poor kids! I usually make sure I've prepared something before I have to leave. They love cooking way more than Dad.

Last night Daddy & daughter #1 fixed dinner. (I was at daughter #2's basketball tournament)
Dinner was as follows: Crunchy Taco Hamburger Helper Salsa Chips canned peas instant mashed potatoes coleslaw cornbread
While I thought this was a very odd combination, logic was as follows: * I keep Hamburger Helper on hand at home. For some reason, that is the only thing our daddy is comfortable fixing for the family. * It needed chips & salsa to round out the meal * daddy decided we needed more vegetables & the only thing he could find was a can of peas * daughter #1 just likes potatoes. * they found the coleslaw & cornbread leftover from other meals & figured what the heck.

As for tonight-I'm trying a new recipe. I'm putting a twist on the "mini calzone" recipe I found on this site. I'm using the larger crescent rolls, and have turkey & ham slices and pepperoni, with mozzerella cheese. I'm going to let my kids help put their choice of meat on the dough, then the cheese and any sauce they want. Then, you just roll them up and bake them until the rolls are golden brown. Sounds easy and good, and is something they can have fun helping me make. I hope they turn out good!!!

I COMPLETELY agree! I'm no saint when it comes to my kids nutrition-yes, they go to McDonald's now and again, but COME ON! Mothers like that are the reason our country's children are SO obese!!! I do let my kids help in the kitchen, but I NEVER expect my 6yr. old to fend for herself! That's part of being a PARENT!

Foxxxy, good point. Maybe she takes her kids with her when she gets her mani's and pedi's???
Cooking isn't the only way to spend quality time with the kids. However, IMNSHO, a parent has the absolute responsibility of providing the basics for their children. Food, clothing, etc. and filling the pantry with DIY food for a 6 yo doesn't exactly qualify.

I had the same experience but I always fixed the problem.........smoothed the icing on the cupcake, etc.

IMO we should not second guess Kim Ber's choices.
For all we know her family wants here out of the kitchen.

Well Gee, I have a lot of friends that"'don't cook" and they still spend a lot of time with their families. Maybe Kem Ber would like to share with us what other things she dose with her children?

Oh my! I only wish my mom was a better cook than she was. I can only remember a couple of my gran's and great gran's recipes, someone is missing out on some cool family time here.
