I'm not sure if you're looking for gift ideas.. but something cute that my sister got for her shower was a diaper cake. You take a package (or a few) of diapers, roll all of the diapers up seperately and stand them up end-to-end to make cake tiers. Then you can stick whatever decoration you'd like onto the "cake." Rattles, socks, binkies, bottles, bibs, toys.. If your new mommy likes to scrapbook you can SET scrapbook stickers on the cake so she can use them in her new book.
I'd say make some yummy sugar cookies to go with your tea and decorate them in a gender friendly frosting.
A game.. go in with your fellow party throwers and buy a diaper bag with lots of goodies to put into it. The more the better. At the shower, have all of the girls sit in a circle. Give them all a piece of paper and a pen. Dump all of the goodies out of the diaper bag into the middle of the circle for a selected amount of time. Put the goodies back in the diaper bag and let the guest write down how many they can remember. The one with the most items gets a prize. The new mom, of course, keeps the diaper bag with all of the goodies.

Family fun magazine for June had a bunch of cute ideas - one was to make custom "bonnets" out of adorable wrapping paper and colored tape (like electrical tape). They were really cute. Don't know if that would work - but you could include "wear a bonnet" on your invites!

paula dean had a great idea that i saw this am. (10-8-07) on her noon time show called breakfast in bed. she made these spinach and guerere cheese torts with puff pastry. go to foodtv.com. and you should find it. it looked very elegant and dainty. i have also been on this excotic fruit binge. starfruit or "carambola' sp? is great for a fun and decorative appetizer platter. when you cut it, it will be shaped like a star, and it tastes somewhat like a tart apple. i think it would go well with a cheese and fruit platter with toasted baguette rounds.

Shawnasegrest, I love baby showers . At my granddaughters, they put a new twist in the guessing game. you put 10/12 baby items on a tray, pass it around, giving each person 15/20 seconds to look at it. Then they have to write, from memory, what was on the tray. "usually ", but after the tray was passed around, my granddaughter took the tray and went to another area, where we couldn't see her. Then we were told to write down 12 items that my granddaughter had on her bedy, not counting her clothes. . WOW was that a surprise, especially for those who had played the game and knew what to expect. Another was, put a paper plate ,not styrofoam, on top of their heads and draw a picture of the baby, putting the body parts for a boy/girl last. Is that funny. the one that looked the best ,got the prize, then the Mom keeps the plates for the baby book. I always have 2 gifts for each game, 1 for the winner and one for the baby, small items. let us know how it went and what you done . annakf

Yes, definitely finger sandwiches!
You might also think about a fancy fruit salad and some other side salads, like a salad nicoise or even just a really good green salad.
A platter of cheeses or cheeses and fruit (instead of fruit salad).
Finger foods like deviled eggs, stuffed cherry tomatoes, marinated olives, etc.
The key is to think LIGHT -- tea party food is light, and I personally think a lot of smaller bites is more fun that a main dish.
Also, if you are serving alcohol, champagne-based drinks like Bellinis and Kir Royals are fun and you can use cheap champagne or sparkling wine.
Have fun!

For food you could do little finger sandwiches (like, egg salad, watercress, deviled ham, chicken salad...), make lady finger cookies dipped in milk chocolate & white and drizzled with pink or blue colored chocolate (if you know the sex) or both colors if you don't. You could make a fruit salsa or a fruit dip with sliced tropical fruits, Since you're doing a tea party, you could have a fruity flavored white tea, and of course you have to serve it in pretty little tea cups! Use a pretty tiered serving tray for the food, instead of a cake (if you want one) make mini cheesecakes, and top them with appropriately colored fruits (strawberries, raspberries, cherries, blueberries, black raspberries, etc). For the table centerpiece, you could get a really pretty china teapot, with some fresh flowers in it. Depending on the time of year, this would be a great party to have out in a garden, and if there's an arched trellis in the garden, the mom-to-be or the gift table could sit under it. If you do it outside, you could check with area rental companies and see if you can rent 2 person metal bistro tables for the guests to sit at. Sorry I can't help much with games, but you could do word searches, and then & now type thing where you compare prices of baby items from the year the mom-to-be was born to now, if it's a surprise shower, you could take bets from all the guests on what time exactly the guest of honor will arrive (or how many minutes she'll be late if she's like me!), and whoever comes the closest wins a prize. You could write something out on the bottoms of the plates, and get the guests to unscramble the words.

You can Google "Tea Party" and get a number of suggestions and recipes. Just ignore the hits about the Boston Tea Party.
It sounds like a wonderful idea.
