I try to stay away from junk food, fast food places, snack bars, and sweets along with salt, and fat. That worked for me.

If you are like many Americans, you have many intentions to eat healthy. But with busy schedules and little time to cook, healthy eating can take a back seat. Is this why diabetes research needs more money all the time to find a cure?. Am I not right here ?.

Bacon and Chocolate

I recently heard that bacon and chocolate truly compliment each other. And some gourmet cooks have been experimenting with this combination.

Bacon Gumballs

Novelty candy retailer Archie McPhee produces some of the wackiest bacon products around. Bacon-flavored gumballs, mints, and jelly beans top our list. After you're done munching on all of the bacon candy, be sure to clean your teeth using the bacon dental floss.

Wendy’s Baconator

Then there's the Baconator sandwich with several 1/4 pound stacks high, up to 6, that is a hamburger sold by the international fast-food restaurant chain Wendy's. It is one of their late-teen–to–young-adult, male-oriented products.

What's next?. Bacon wrapped doughnuts stuffed with M&M's ?.

Shall we top it off with a few Fried Mozzarella Cheese Sticks ?.

INGREDIENTS
2 eggs, beaten
1/4 cup water
1 1/2 cups Italian seasoned bread crumbs
1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
2/3 cup all-purpose flour
1/3 cup cornstarch
1 quart oil for deep frying
1 (16 ounce) package mozzarella cheese sticks

DIRECTIONS
In a small bowl, mix the eggs and water. Mix the bread crumbs and garlic salt in a medium bowl. In a medium bowl, blend the flour and cornstarch. In a large heavy saucepan, heat the oil to 365 degrees F (185 degrees C). One at a time, coat each mozzarella stick in the flour mixture, then the egg mixture, then in the bread crumbs and finally into the oil. Fry until golden brown, about 30 seconds. Remove from heat and drain on paper towels. FOOTNOTES We have determined the nutritional value of oil for frying based on a retention value of 10% after cooking. The exact amount may vary depending on cook time and temperature, ingredient density, and the specific type of oil used.

Oh yea, what's for dessert?. Can I have a soda to wash it down, supper-size it to, add in a large order of French fries to.

NOT.......

Connie, I felt the same way when I was diagnosed last year. I did a search for support groups in my town and found that they offer a diabetic class at our local Hospital. It was really wonderful they helped us learn portions and snacks and carbs and all sorts of great stuff.
They sent us home with books and a good path to help us eat right.
They told is that snacks should be 1 or 2 a day and carbs should be 15 to 20 for a snack. For meals we were told 25 to 30 carbs a meal and 3 meals a day.
That was for females by the way men have a bit higher numbers.
I also found a great site called Spark pages that is free and lets you keep track of your foods you eat and has ideas for meals and ideas for exercise and groups for many things diabetics included.
I met some wonderful people there.

Check with your local Hospital or health Department and see if you can locate a class in your area. They have you meet with a Physicians assistant who is trained in Diabetes and they have you speak to a dietitian/nutritionist too while doing the classes It lasted 6 weeks and than we have a once a month support meeting.

Here is my Spark page if you want to chat you can contact me through it

Please don't try and figure this out alone. Seek counseling from a Registered Dietitian. Several visits will be necessry, but well worth it!;\

To reply Sandy, I have felt so alone and confused. As a retired teacher, I always do things I an suppose to do, and do them to the best of ability. I am just happy to learn anything. Thanks so much! Connie

I'm pre-diabetic and have a 22 year old son with Type 1 diabetes. What has worked for me is to rigorously count carbohydrate grams and make sure that my carbohydrates wherever possible are nutritious carbs rather than processed carbs. I try not to eat baked/white flour dessert or breakfast products because they are so high in sugar and become more sugar in the bloodstream when digested. I do have them but it's a rarity, not the norm. I eat more vegetables and fruit, less juice, I don't eat artificialy sweetened things for two reasons: 1. Some artificial sweeteners give me gastro problems and 2 Sweet foods make me crave sweet foods. So if I don't eat them I don't want them. Anyway...I have an established number of grams of carbohydrate for the day that I divide up and stick to (or try to stick to) and make sure whenever possible that those carbs are high fiber carbs. I also do three small meals and three small snacks. Carbs are accompanied by protein ordinarily. And I LOVE the South Beach products.

>I drink a dietary supplement called Tahitian Noni Juice

That is not a dietary supplement- but a juice. (Despite what the manufacturers may contend).
It is not recommended for diabetic snacks.

What is recommended is a snack with 15-30 g of carbohydrates (preferably from a high fiber source) and 7g of protein (from a lean source). Momoney1 has it right.
Peanut butter (or nuts) and fruit is a great choice. Cracker Barrel 2% cheese sticks are also great with high fiber crackers or fruit. Even a simple 8oz glass of milk makes a good easy diabetic snack.

When traveling, I try to keep snacks on hand that have a little protein and little fat and eat them with a carb source. For example, the little packets of mixed nuts (gotta watch portions!) and a piece of fruit seem to stave off hunger and help me to avoid highs & lows in my blood sugar.
