NYmom6~ If you make most of the meals in your home your husband may never know the cals are missing. This site has plenty of heathy meals, and most of the recipes may be easy to change. We just never eat potatos or rice anymore. Fill your basics with low fat and high whole grains. You will be surprised how many cals you will leave out just by a simple run to the store. We also only use 1% milk, adults don't need all the extra fat. Also stay away from bannanas and corn, your body breaks them down into pure sugar and you get hungry after eating them. Good Luck! (trust me he will not taste a big change!)

If you have a spouse that refuses to eat something because he considers it "way too healthy" make sure he is heavily insured!

According to the information my daughter received from her dietician you can take a gram of carbohydrate off the total carbs for every gram of fiber you eat. Foods higher in fiber can also help those that have problems with their cholesterol. (And I can't get my husband to eat whole grain anything because he even says it is "far too healthy" for him. So I gotta sneak it in where I can...)
P.S. Reading labels is very important too. And it is an easy way to keep track.

I hope so too, as I do not eat any kind of fish, including crabs.
As far as artificial sweeteners, that's all I use in my house because I don't want to get fat. I'm trying to get my hubby to drop some pounds but he's a hopeless cause.

I hope this about lower carbs not lower crabs!
So, even the the low carb thing is very last year, it is much better for you to use 100% whole wheat or grain than white bread products. Artificail sweeteners are a wonderful product. It's all I use now instead of suger. I have not gotten any tremors, cramps, cancer or stuff from it. I like Splenda a lot and can even bake with itbut I don't because then I would have to use fat and I can't. I think people confuse the artificial sweeteners sometimes. And, you can eat lots of fat on low carb diets, but I can;t do that because I have trouble digesting fat and that's why I use olive oil but I don't drink it, I just cook with it and put it on salads.

This is a good question! We used to eat rice with almost every dinner, now we make couscous. We love it! Be sure that you read your lables on your breads, and go for whole grains. At lunch try using pita bread (whole wheat) instead of white bread. Also try and stay away from pure sugar, splenda can be used in all sorts of things. The less sugar you put into your body the better, the sugar will make you feel hungry! Good Luck!

I am not sure if they are lower or higher (or in the middle?) but a can of crabmeat mixed with whipped creme cheese makes a great sandwich filling.

Hi Shannon, I would suggest trying some of the new lower-carb pastas...some aren't too bad; there are some whole wheat ones that are pretty tasty. Toss them with some garlic, butter, parmesan...and pine nuts if you like them...yum! Best, Jenny
