I dont like to keep mine for anymore than a year.
sometimes it will depend on how they are stored.
it they are in a square can, they may be good for up to a couple of years. also if you dont use specific seasonings or spices very often, buy them in smaller amounts if you can. i think that mccormic makes a large and small package.
some spices i like to keep in the fridge, or freezer like lemon pepper and dried herbs. it keeps them fresher a little longer.
i like to spice shopping once a year and as it may be a bit pricey, i like to buy good stuff. i get alot of mine from penzeys...this website would be a good source of info for you.

I hope that some of this helps. good luck!!!http://www.penzeys.com/cgi-bin/penzeys/shophome.html
