The prblem with cleaning a chicken in your sink is that it can contaminate the sink and you don't want that. I take my chickens outside and wash them off with the hose.
It is a bit inconvenient during the cold winter months but it's better than making my family sick.

You need to clean them before you cook them? Huh - go figure.

A pressure washer is great for removing the feathers?

I wouldn't have a problem using the vacuum cleaner, as long as it's a wet & dry one.

Yeah, I would recommend the sink. I wouldn't use the dishwasher, washing machine, power washer or vacuum cleaner.

The chickens I buy are already dead (from the grocery stroe) but they have a lot of blood and gore inside them so I soak them in cold water with about 10 squirts of Purell in the water. I have to change the water about 3 times because the blood and bits of gore float out. That's good -- you don't want to eat that stuff. Actually some people say you can, but I'd rather not. Hope this helps.

Thank you everyone - I was not expecting so much so quickly!
I don't have a dishwasher so I'll be putting it under the tap and cleaning it that way.
Thank you again!

If I cleaned my thawed chicken on the bottom rack and left it for the dry cycle wouldn't it cook as well? I'm thinking a rinse aid basket filled with rosemary/thyme/sage and maybe some lemon zest would make a wonderful boquet garni. I saw a guy cook salmon this way, why not chicken?

Don't be ridiculous! Every real cook knows that chickens are only dishwasher safe for the TOP rack!

Stand it up in the bottom rack of your dishwasher. Run it through the wash cycle. Don't run it through the dry cycle unless you need to thaw it, too.

I assume it is not alive still, and the feathers are gone, right?
Just scrub it inside and out with a regular towel under running water. Don't use any soap. Then rub it inside and out with salt and lemon to kill germs and get rid of the chicken odor.

What do you mean by clean? Running it under tap water and removing the gizzard pouch? Deboning it?
As for recipes, roast it for dinner, or poach it for soup. Possibilites are endless. Google is your friend, my friend.

Hello, I recently bought my first whole chicken, and I want to make sure I clean it properly. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to do this and a great recipe for a whole chicken? Thanks!
