Love the crock pot liners except when it is time to sitr. Then they pull away and tend to tear but when using them for roasts or something that doesn't need to be stirred they are the best!

Just a thought... Would this be a huge mess to clean up? I imagine cherry filling glued to the sides of my slow-cooker.
I guess you can get those crock-pot liners. Anyone use those before?

Hi Eli Zabeth, I'll let you know how it comes out but it won't be for at least a month to six weeks as I'm going on vacation to the West coast.

Hi Eli Zabeth,
Thanks for your comments. I too have made this type cake many times but only in an oven. I also always melt my butter and drizzle it over the cake mix like you do. The recipe I've had for years calls for 1 1/2 sticks of melted unsalted butter. (Paula Deen would approve).
My original recipe also doesn't call for the individual pkg of cinnamon oatmeal topping and sliced almonds. That's the new additions that peaked my interest in this recipe. It's all for the crunch.
I'll give the chocolate cake mix a try with the cherry pie filling;that and some coconut would be great. Thanks again for adding to the variety of this recipe.
I think the reason for the paper towels between the slow cooker insert and the lid is to absord all the moisture the slow cooker generates and keep the moisture from dropping down onto the cake and topping thus resulting in a soggy unappetizing gooey mess.

Chef Bill - I'm not sure exactly which you are asking - about this particular recipe or this method of cooking.
I have made dump cakes before - any mix of canned fruit & cake mix is great - as you suggest, apple or peach pie filling (or applesauce) & white cake mix, or cherry pie filling & chocolate cake mix. Blueberry pie filling is good too. If you go with canned pineapples, I'll bet coconut would be nice . Also, most recipes don't include the oatmeal topping.
I usually melt the butter & drizzle it over the top of the cake mix. To me that is easier than slicing the butter.
I've never made it in a crockpot, so I don't know if you really need the paper towels. None of the recipes I could find mentioned that.

I have tried a dump cake with just cherry filling and yellow cake and its was OK, this one sounds really good. I like the pairing of cherry and pears and the topping of oatmeal cereal and amonds will give it a nice crunch. I think I might have to put this on my to make list as well. Thank you for sharing the recipe.

"Dump Cake" or "Tired Mama Cake" in a slow cooker

I had the following recipe passed on to me recently. It's a recipe how to make a "Dump Cake" or "Tired Mama" cake in a slow cooker.
First, into the slow cooker, "dump" a can of cherry pie filling and two cans of chopped pears with juice (about 15 oz size, each), mix well.
Next evenly sprinkle a box of white or yellow cake mix over the fruit, do not mix in.
Cut up a stick of unsalted butter in tsp size slices and spread evenly over the entire cake mix. Now sprinkle an individual pkg of cinnamon flavored oatmeal cereal over the entire surface and top with a 1/4C of slivered almonds. (I bet pecans would be good too)!
Since slow cookers generate a lot of moisture put five or six thicknesses of plain white kitchen paper towels over the top of the slow cooker's rim then put on the lid. Cook on low 4-6 hours. Do not peek!
Has anyone out there heard of this recipe before? It sounds wonderful and appears to be a dessert recipe that could be modified with other type ingredients such as apple pie or peach pie filling, crushed pineapple, whatever.
I've added it to my "to make list" when I get back from vacation the end of December.
Has anyone in the community tried a recipe similar to this before?
Thanks!
