I have a niece & nephew in college, and they love when I send homemade "chex mix" or cookies. Keep the microwave popcorn coffee singles coming, too!

I just graduated from college. My advice would be to make whatever you want to (casseroles, your famous spaghetti sauce, whatever) in individual serving in small containers so that they can be easily heated up in the microwave and more easily stored in the outrageously small dorm refrigerators. The dining hall will be great at making cereal, hamburgers and sandwiches, so I would send her off with chicken and meat dishes that are always overcooked, dry, and nasty at school. Pasta sauce, too, if she likes pasta, is always gross at the dining hall. And, no matter what time she comes home - even if it's 2 in the afternoon, have her favorite meal cooking on the stove. My mom always did that, and it made me realize 1) how much I missed good food! and 2) how much my mom loved me! Also, a fabulous Christmas gift idea from you and other family members would be gift cards to the nearest grocery store to campus. That way, even when you're not with her, you can make sure that she has lots of good things to eat. Good luck!

ham and cheese, cereal, and > spaghetti is what she will eat while studying.
Don't forget Pez and soda for those late night sugar rush study sessions.

My daughter also just headed back to college, too. She plays softball, so we will see her a few weekends for fall ball. As someone else already wrote in, she doesn't really eat a lot of big home cooked meals. Sometimes we'll take frozen homemade chili to her that they can heat up. My husband cuts up chicken breasts for quick stir fry's and they have a George Foresman for cooking chicken or a hamburger quickly. She's not a real big meat eater, though. Between classes and practices, she has little time for cooking. So I usually send quick snacky things that are nutritious. Kraft brand offers lots of choices! We also visited the local farm market before she left and stocked her up on veggies, cheese, and fruit. I always bake low fat muffins for her to share with her team mates, room mates, or the guys down the hall from her apt. They're a big hit! 1 15 oz. can of pumpkin 1 dry cake mix (any flavor: spice, yellow, chocolate) 1/2 cup of choco chips or white chips
Put in greased muffin tins. Bake at 400 degrees for 20 minutes. They can freeze them and pull them out as needed. It makes 12 muffins.
Have your daughter check out the local subway. On Tuesday's they have the $5. sub. They buy the foot long, cut it in half and eat part for dinner that day and the other half for lunch the next! Best wishes to you and your daughter! It's so hard to let go, but they always seem to find their way back home!

no offense, but she will live on the FOOD COURT!! ( well, atleast for the first semester , maybe longer) but dont fret, pumpkin, yes, mom's dishes, as much as WE LOVE them, will better be appreciated at home, where mom is... you just sent your daughter off to college. with the food card in hand... ham and cheese, cereal, and spaghetti is what she will eat while studying. let her live a little bit, as i KNOW that she wants to do. send her a care package if you want to. but when she comes home on a break, make sure she smells something familiar!!!!!! TRUST ME,, that smell will SOO be appreciated!!!!!!! i am sure that it is hard to let go, and i have no idea what a mom feels like letting her daughter go, but i DO know what it is like from a daughter's standpoint, that when i was a kid in college, i missed my mom... , and coming home to those familiar smells made it all worth it!!! good luck to your daughter!!!! ...and you too...

when i went off to college, my favorite thing to bring back after a weekend at home was my grandmother's chicken casserole. With layers of stuffing, chicken and other yummy goodness, it was a perfect comfort for homesick nights!

Taverns (loosemeats), bbq beef (or pork), soups, lasagna, meatloaf, manacoti are a few things that pop into mind that all keep really well for a couple days and heat up nicely. Left over roast, turkey, and ham make great sandwiches and keep for a while in the fridge.
