The other posters gave a lot of great advice! Being the picky one in the family (I don't eat potatoes, bananas, and very few beans), it's hard and not a lot of fun being the picky eater. To make him really understand, I would ask him to select three meals he wants, then you do the same. That way he can understand the frustration, and will relieve some of that stress by providing you with other ideas. When he picks chicken alfredo, look at the other recipes on this site that are very similar, and slowly start branching him off onto other foods. Also for picky eaters, no matter how old they are, you can't go wrong looking at the kid recommended meals, as really a lot of our pickiness is left over from the way we ate as a child, and I bet you can find some meals there that you can present him with at dinnertime.
I became a vegetable eater by first adding them to the foods I already loved, I still don't enjoy eating vegetables, but I found those that I can tolerate or hide or partner with other foods that I do like. Good luck and if you have time, please post what worked, if anything, so others can see as well. Picky eating is the one of the biggest problems some households face.

My suggestions are: Get a crock pot if you dont already have one. Then either buy a crock pot cookbook or get one from the library. Then have your boyfriend choose a few recipes that he thinks would appeal to him. A really great cookbook to get is called FIX IT AND FORGET IT COOKBOOK ,FEASTING WITH YOUR SLOW COOKER. It is a compilation of different peoples recipes. I love it. Whenever I get a new cookbook I always have my husband look through it and pick out recipes that sound good to him.. I hope this helps you a bit.

I know how ya feel, well kinda..My boyfriends not the picky one, I am! and we don't have the biggest budget either. A recipe we enjoy is Shepard's Pie. I don't know if he eats ground beef? If not, try substituting with chicken, I've never tried it...but Ill assume it'd be great..I use the simple recipe found here on the site..Use frozen veggies and pick out anything he doesn't like (I know, pain in the butt) The great thing about Shepard's pie is that you usually have lots of leftovers (I mean LOTS! My bf's a big eater and we usually have leftovers for at least 3 nights!) Everything needed if very cheap, and we both enjoy this recipe..

heres a new one for ya. if he likes scaloped potatoes but not the ham, substitute hot dogs for the ham. i'd make 1 half with ham for me and the other half with hot dos for him. mom was a foster care mother as i was growing up sometimes there was 12 of us kids to cook for, and she taught me alot about saving money preparing dinner. as kids we ate alot of cereal for breakfast, so eggs or french toast for supper was a real treat at times. dad would always work on sundays so mom would do an easy cheap dinner for all us kids. like scrambled eggs, with egg noodles and milk and butter sauce. or once we had oatmeal and toast. i dipped my toast and was in love forever.also i've learned you get alot more, and way cheaper hash if you make your own with canned corned beef, potatoes and onions. alot more. to save grocery money buy and if you can cook bulk, i always make extra and freeze. then you have a delicious meal already just thaw heat and eat. like yeaserday i cooked a 22 lb. turkey i got real cheap at thanksgiving time now i get to experament with new casserole recipies till the meat is gone yummy.thats a post i'd like to start.

apparently my husband and your boyfriend come from the same mold...my two suggestions to you are this:
first, the not having time thing: make a bunch of stuff on a saturday and pop them in individual containers so you can just nuke them or defrost them every day. OR look up easy recipes on the internet example: if you want chili, look up easy chili recipe on google and you'll find a recipe that takes 20 minutes instead of 5 hours.
second, when i make stuff or we eat out, i make my husband try at least one bite of what i am eating. sometimes he just doesn't know that he likes something yet. that helps get more options into his diet.
its really hard for him when his mom cooks and doesn't care that he doesn't like veggies, etc., so don't just ignore that, because then he just ends up eating cereal and not getting any nutritional value at all.
i like going on rachael ray's website... a lot of her stuff is real quick and pretty healthy.
hope that helps a little bit!

I understand about the picky eater! I grew up with a picky brother, now I have been married to a picky husband for over 10 years. He hates condiments, fruit(except apple pie), and most veggies(he eats potatoes, corn, and green beans). We have tacos with meat and cheese, pasta with spaghetti sauce, and a lot of individual microwave meals. We have three boys(6, 3, 6 months), so I feed them healthy foods, but by the time I help them and feed the baby, I usually give up and pop something in the microwave. My husband will fix something for himself if he doesn't like what I fix, but it is never healthy. He needs to eat better(he is overweight), but I am at a loss.

It seems that I have a simlar problem. My husband is a trucker and he's never home. When he's not home we eat everything that the kids like to eat and that is basicaly everything but when my husband is home he won't eat chicken and is starting to not eat any pork its beef only and trying out thing on him won't do because if I do its like killing him. But here is a meatloaf recipe that he does like and I also use this in my stuffed peppers too.
I Lb Hamburger I/2 tube mild sausage I onion chopped 1/2 cup chopped mild salad pepper rings 1 egg mustard ketchup 2 garlic cloves 1/2 cup bread crumbs
Make sure that the meat is at room temp its easier to mix together if it is. Mix everything together and put it in a glass loaf pan and bake 1 hour at 350 degrees. Let it sit for a couple of minutes and take it out of its pan I then put ketchup on the top. My family loves it

you are trying to make the most of your money, and eat healthy for yourself...everything he likes is cheap and easy...buy a carload of mac and cheese, store brand hot dogs, store brand pancake mix and hook him up!! buying store brand will save you money, so while he has his high schoolers' lunch for dinner, you can make yourself a nice ribeye and a salad!! everyone's happy!!

Hi! I just found this forum this morning and this is the first thread I've read. I have a suggestion since it sounds like he loves sausage. Several years ago when ground turkey was hard to find, I ran across a recipe for using it to make Italian sausage. My family (even the picky eater) loved it ... I still make it, though the kids are grown and have kids of their own ... all of whom love the "homemade" sausage. Thankfully, ground turkey is easy to find now. I've altered it over the years a little bit, but here it is. Since it's just the two of us now, usually we'll only use half of it, so I refrigerate or freeze the other half.
1 pounds fresh ground turkey 1 teaspoon whole fennel seed 1 teaspoon crushed fennel seed * 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon pepper ½ teaspoon garlic powder 2 teaspoon ground sage (optional - added by me) 1 teaspoon paprika
* Sometimes crushed fennel is hard to find, so I crush some in my old electric coffee grinder.
Mix it all, together and cook it thoroughly. You can make patties or crumbled for casseroles or pizza. Good Luck!

Sausage? Do you mean breakfast sausage only (PORK I thought he did not eat pork?)
Try those Italian turkey Sausages they are lean and there are also chicken sausages out there as well (look for the lean ones) Also the chicken sausages are often just heat and serve so it will save you time. Get if you can hooked up with a friend that has Costco/Sam's club membership (go shopping with them) a bag of chicken breast or thighs are cheaper so is the whole chicken which someone mention can be spread out into other meals.
Salad is an easy healthy add on for yourself. Search for some kid friendly recipes these usually help those picky eaters as well.
You have not mention fish you can make your own fish sticks with shake and bake and Tilapia (white fish no fishy smell or taste) often is inexpensive. (I do not know where you live some inland state fish is always expensive)
Add a little melted cheese and salsa for dipping this healthy a change from chicken maybe it will work for the both of you.
If you prep the ingredients before had like chopping and measuring things out you could save time so when you get home just throw it in the oven or pan on the stove. Good luck to you.

My fiance is also picky. It seems like I have such a limited amount of recipes to make. I call him a meat and potatoes kind of guy. There is also just the two of us and I can most make a smaller amount so there is little to no leftovers. Here are some things that he likes:
Scalloped potatoes and ham-since he doesn't like pork, try it without the ham. I cut about about 3 large potatoes and place them in my 9x9 square pan. I warm up a small package of Velveeta with a can of cream of mushroom in it until melted. I then add some chopped ham to the cheese mixture and pour over potatoes, cover with foil and bake at 350 until potatoes are tender (about 1-1.5 hours). I've also been wanting to try this in the crock pot but have not yet tried it.
Smothered cubed steak-in a crock pot I put two cubed steak and smother them with a can of cream of celery and a can of cream of mushroom and a packet of dry onion soup and cook on low 9 hours. When I get home from work, I boil some water and throw some egg noodles in until tender. I put some noodles on a plate top it with one (or a half) of the cubed steak, spoon some soup on top and it is kind of like a beef stroganoff.
Meatloaf-I take about 2 pound of beef, 2 eggs, 1/3 cup ketchup, 3/4 cup water, 1 packet dry onion soup mix and 1 1/2 cups bread crumbs, mix all together, place it in a pan and bake 350 for 1 hour
Hope any one of these will help

If he's old enough to live on his own, he's old enough to act like an adult and take care of himself.
Nothing on your list of things he'll eat is particularly nutritious except the chicken and the carrots.
He'll need to start eating green vegetables as well as other healthy foods.
No one is "allergic to fruit." They may be allergic to some kinds of fruit (stone fruit, tropical fruit, melons) but not to all fruits. He needs to find out whuch kinds he can eat and eat them.
Coddling him is the absolute worst thing you can do for him and for your future together.

Hi,
This is pretty common--or I would like to believe so because I am in the same situation with my fiance. I haven't read any of the other replies...one I glanced over said something along the lines of "tell him to grow up" but I ask you this. If our culture was different and eating grilled insects were the norm and you thought it positively disgusting and someone told you "to grow up", I could bet money on it that you would feel cornered and non plussed. ANYWAYS. Picky Eaters...my fiance will NOT eat Veggies, Pork, or Seafood. Finding something he likes is hard because he likes the same things and in the very beginning we had the same things day in and day out. SO what did I do. I took the things he liked and came to this web site and other recipe websites and made variations on the things he did like. It has worked out well, by seeing what he didn't like so much and what he loved. See if your boyfriend would be open to trying the variations of what he loves---but assure him you have a 'back up' safe dinner if he just can't stomach it. BUT don't force him to eat things that he is dead set against trying, it isn't going to better him or make him a healthier eater...it will just make waves. :P He is a grown man and can make those choices for himself. Plus making him "fend" for himself would probably drive him to worse more convenient food. I would take what you can get! :P Good Luck!
