I place the brown sugar bag and all into a ziploc freezer bag along with my brown sugar bear. The brown sugar stays fresh and soft until I have used the last cup.

Hi, I use a little gadget called Brown Sugar Bears.
It will keep brown sugar moist for approximately 3-6 months, you may also use it for your cakes, cookies, raisins, coconut, popcorn kernels, tobacco, cigars, licorice. I bought my at Bed, Bath and Beyond.
While posting this reply, I found online a website about the Brown Bears and it said: To use the Sugar Bear simply soak it in warm water for 20 minutes, then place it in the brown sugar. When your brown sugar begins to get hard again to simply take it out and repeat the process.

Simply put the open bag into a good Zip Lock or any kind of airtight bag, easy to store, and no chunks or rocks!

Ahh, DC you beat me to it. I knew there was something about bread in the "Kitchen Tips" thread but couldn't find it. Isn't there a silly little terra cotta bear you can get and toss it in the bag?

You can toss your brown sugar in the microwave for a few seconds, it will soften back up. I usually will secure the bag with a chip clip or clothes pin to help keep the moisture out.

A very easy fix is to keep it stored in an air tight container like Tupperware. What I do is after each use is to run my hand under running water and lightly flick a little water on the lid. It doesn't take much. (This is starting with fresh brown sugar of course) The next time I open my brown sugar container - it is a soft as it was the day it went in there! I swear by this.

Does anyone have a tip on how to keep brown sugar soft after opening? My bags end up hard as rocks and I have to throw them away!
