Hi, Joe and welcome to the community. I guess we didn't ask if you disliked the taste of thyme or just didn't have any around? Most Italian seasoning blends contain thyme, so if it's a health or taste issue, you might want to avoid those.

If you are new to cooking and have a limited assortment of herbs and spices, and taste/health are not an issue, an Italian seasoning blend is really handy to have around because it is so versatile.

Hi, Joe. What type of meat do you use in your meat loaf? I've used pork and beef. Depending on your choice of meat, you can vary your spices. A dash of paprika, for example, complements pork better than beef or turkey.

The easiest tip I have is to use Italian-seasoned bread crumbs. I also use a combination of garlic powder (add before you put in tomato items) and oregano. You could also use Mrs. Dash or McCormick's "No-Salt All-Purpose" seasoning if you're concerned about sodium.

As another poster mentioned, any Italian spice is typically a good substitution.

Welcome to the community Joewenger. =)

I second what Eemma said, whatever best suits your tastebuds for the Italian spices.

Welcome to the Message Boards!

You could use any of the other "Italian" spices as a substitute. Oregano was the first one I thought of but you could use basil, rosemary or any of the others you like instead -- you could even use one of the pre-mixed seasonings!
