I don't own a mixer either. I had to sell my KA when I moved from Ohio to Alaska this spring. I bought a food processor and it mixes cookie mix and pumpkin pie filling really well. I can't mix by hand due to a previous broken wrist that prevents me from doing a lot of things.

My mom didn't have a mixer or a potato masher. She would cube potatoes and boil them until they were really soft, then drain the water, add butter, salt and pepper and serve. We'd mash them on our plates with our forks if we wanted mashed potatoes. You guys are so spoiled!

And yet, a potato masher is SO much cheaper than a mixer, but you can't make a cake mix with it.

I wanted to add....black friday is coming up and wal-mart usually has their $5 appliance sale....you can pick up a basic new model for $5.

Lotus Girl - you DO have a mixer. Ten of them. Use your hands. They can be your best friend. I have a mixer that I got for a wedding gift 25 years ago and it's still in the box it came in. You don't need it.

My parents never had a mixer. My father used to beat cake mixes and stuff by hand. He never had to join a gym, but one arm was remarkably larger than the other.
You can buy electric mixers that can be used for light duty things really cheap on eBay or Amazon, or better yet, try the Starvation Army Thrift store. I've sent my share of electric mixers there.
