I know it isn't the same, (or as easy) but Eli2abeth posted a home made recipe earlier in this post that is supposed to be close to the old Kraft Garlic Cheese Roll.

i just can't believe it. all these years garlic cheese was there. and now they choose to pull it. what are they thinking? please bring it back. we will buy it, don't worry... my family will be so devastated. garlic cheese grits is part of our family tradition. if you could read the emails and blogs about the garlic cheese grits and how excited they are to come home to have them. kind of like telling them that santa won't be there.

I dont think Kraft understands how many recipies they have messed up by first taking away the jalopino log and now the garlic log? Yes we can try to recreate it? Bet let me fill u in- IT DOESNT WORK- NOR DOES IT TASTE THE SAME!! Couldnt you have discontinued one of your fake cheeze line! Im calling for a boycott of kraft products- expecially the people whos recipies base were thes products! Good luck in the new economy!!!

I have the BEST cheeseball recipe in the world that uses Kraft Roka Blue Salad dressing and a garlic cheese roll plus cream cheese and worcestershire and garlic salt and onion powder. NEVER EVER have I had a cheese ball equal to this one! And nothing will come close to the garlic cheese roll. Tried the Olde English cheese in a jar, but no way! It is not the same! KRAFT - please bring this back! Our grocer also said he had a ton of requests. Make it seasonal or whatever, but JUST DO IT!

How sad to discover that Kraft no longer produces Garlic Cheese Roll. Our garlic cheese grits will never be the same. Please bring it back!

I have always used the Garlic Cheese roll in my green bean casserole, and get raves every year. Very sad when my grocer told me it's not available any longer... I was just speechless. She also said that about 100 people had asked her about it. :(

I have no doubt I can make my casserole tasty with the substitutes, but sure wish I didn't have to.

Happy Thanksgiving :-x

FYI....in preparation to our Thanksgiving meal minus the real "Kraft Garlic Cheese Roll" I made the suggested recipe below on Sunday. I do have to say it is very promissing!!!

We will not know until tomorrow how well it works with our brocolli cheese casserole but from what I can see now it will be a close substitute.

If you and your family is in the same delima as ours with not being able to purchase the Kraft Garlic Cheese roll, I encourage you to make this recipe below. There is hope!!

Happy Thanksgiving,
Amy Reed

Hi Amy,
Welcome to the message boards! I am sorry that Garlic Cheese Roll is no longer available. I know it was an important ingredient in many family-favorite recipes. The recipe that Eli2abeth posted looks promising. If you try it, be sure to let us know if it was a good substitute.

I found an article on the The-Dispatch.com!!! With any luck, Kraft will let me post it in it's entirety here:

Whatever happened to Garlic Cheese Roll?

I'm out to solve a mystery. What, I ask, has Kraft done with their product known as Garlic Cheese Roll? It is an important ingredient in our dear and delicious garlic cheese grits, without which the entire South mourns.

At present, I have a call in to Kraft. After about 30 minutes of listening to boring music (definitely not ear candy) and after being transferred four times, I finally was informed they'd get back to me when they had time.

Sleuth that I am, I decided to call Jeannie Leonard at the Davidson County Agricultural Extension Service office and, aha, she had the answer. Here is her recipe for garlic cheese roll. It will make a bunch; Jeannie says you can keep it in the refrigerator for three to four months and/or use it as a cheese spread.

Garlic Cheese Rolls

11/2 pounds sharp cheddar cheese, grated

1/2 pound processed cheese product such as Velveeta

3 ounces cream cheese

1 teaspoon seasoned salt

Garlic powder to taste

Soften cheeses and mix all together well. Shape into four rolls and wrap well in foil or plastic wrap.

Now, you can make this delicious grits casserole for your next brunch. Add Peggy Walser's yummy M&M Biscuits for another real treat.

Company Grits

11/2 cup quick cooking grits

4 cups water

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup butter or margarine

6 ounces (1 roll) garlic cheese

4 ounces Swiss cheese, grated

1/2 cup milk

1 cup sour cream

3 eggs, slightly beaten

Salt and pepper to taste

1/3 cup Parmesan cheese, grated

Paprika

Cook grits in salted water according to package directions. While hot, add butter, garlic and Swiss cheese, blend well. Cool slightly. Combine milk, sour cream, beaten eggs, salt and pepper to taste. Blend with grits. Pour into a greased 3-quart casserole. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese and paprika. Bake in a preheated 325-degree oven for 50 minutes.

M&M Biscuits

2 cups sifted self-rising flour

1 cup milk

2 tablespoons mayonnaise

Mix together till smooth and sort of thin. Drop into buttered mini-muffin pans and bake in a 450-degree oven for 10 minutes until golden brown. Can add 1/2 cup grated cheese.

Kraft Garlic Cheese Roll

Posted: Nov 17, 2008 12:30 PM
PLEASE HELP!!!! Our families Thanksgiving & Christmas Dinners will never be the same anymore since Kraft has decided to stop manufacturing the Garlic Cheese Roll. For generations, our family has served Brocolli Cheese casserole made with this cheese and after many trips to different grocery stores in the Dallas/Fort Worth area with out any luck in finding this cheese, I called the Kraft consumer hotline to be told this terrible news. Sooo, looking for a Plan B we need your help. In the past due to not enough stock of the Garlic Cheese we tried Velvetta and it was terrible. What, if any ideas do you have to recommend to us to substitute for the Garlic Cheese log? Thanks in advance we are eager to hear back with your help. Sincerely, Amy Reed Fort Worth, Texas
