Hi Fresser, Holidays can be challenging! First, don’t panic. Keep in mind the average holiday weight gain is only 1 pound! And remember moderation is key. If you overdo it at one meal, don’t feel guilty; instead, eat a little less at the next and resolve to move more. By staying active you’ll handle stress better and burn some extra calories.

Now that the holiday season is upon us, how do you use the meal plan when you attend a party? How can I accurately calculate what I've eaten if I haven't prepared it or have any idea how it was prepared? I guess I can do the best I can to tally up the evenings calories, but I'd love some advice on how others handle these occasions. Thanks!

One key component to smart party eating is to not arrive hungry. Have a small, nutritious snack before you get there and focus on conversation, not food. As far as tallying calories, offer to bring a dish that fits with your eating goals. This will give you a fall back plan!

I’m on a diet, and I’m dreading the holidays. I want them to be fun, but I’m scared I’m going to gain weight! I don't want to lose ground, but I don't want to miss out either.

I don't get it?
It's a PAR TAY! The whole point is to eat and drink stuff you stay away from otherwise.
It would ve very, very sad to eat veggies and not dip at a PAR TAY.

I only allow myself a certain number of calories per day. When I'm at a party I never eat, that way I can have more to drink. I find if I only have 1 or 2 drinks I get hungry, but if I have more I don't, so I usually toss back 3-4 G&Ts before I head out. This strategy won't work for everyone.

Why worry about what you eat at a party?
You should probably worry a lot more about the processed convenience foods you eat on an everyday basis than what you eat at parties.

When I was doing the Glycemix Index and I would go to parties I would eat before I got there so that way I wasn't starving. Then if I did want to have something while there I would take 1 or 2 appetizers on a cocktail napkin instead of loading a plate full of food. Also, mingling/standing while eating is a way to not eat as much.
When not doing the GI I pretty much agree with Bra Fat. She's right when she says "It's not like it's an everyday thing". Eat drink and be merry are my words to live by (especially the dinking part ).

Hi again Arlene!
I think it's OK just to eat whatever at a party.
It's not like it's an everyday thing.
Then you can just skip eating the next day if you really pigged out.
